A College Kid’s Guide to Bethlehem

Welcome to the 18015: the small, quaint city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Lehigh University is quite literally located on the side of a mountain, in the center of the Lehigh Valley. While we do not go to school in the most lively of places, over the years I’ve gained a love for Bethlehem’s cute, small-town feel. In some places in Bethlehem you’ll feel as though you’re in the middle of nowhere, and in others you’ll feel as though you are smack in the middle of a bustling town.

Here’s the low-down on the best places to eat, things to do, and where to shop to make the most of your time in Bethlehem.

South Bethlehem

Where to Eat: Located at the bottom of the hill, Saxby’s is the go-to for a quick coffee in between classes. They also have delicious smoothies and sandwiches, and it’s a great place to do work when you don’t feel like trekking to the library. Deja Brew is another authentic Bethlehem coffee shop. Their iced coffee has coffee ice cubes which don’t water down your coffee, and they have sandwiches, soups and salads. Because the majority of Lehigh students hail from New York and New Jersey, having a solid bagel store in Bethlehem is a priority. Johnny’s Deli, in Farrington Square, is the go-to for a bacon, egg and cheese. Alexandra’s Bistro is the cozy hometown diner where you can count on the waiters to always remember your name. They have delicious omelettes and great breakfast deals. Roasted is another popular brunch / lunch spot. Right now they have an adorable outdoor setup, and I recommend trying their pancakes—they’re out of this world. The Goose is a Lehigh student staple. The deli is full of Lehigh memorabilia and Tony, the owner, is the friendliest guy. Hot tip: look up the secret menu before you go to try a unique sandwich you can only get there. If you’re craving Mexican, try Tulum and eat outside on their chic patio. El Jefe’s is another great option for a quick and easy “Chipotle style” meal. Dinky’s Ice Cream Parlor & Grill is a new ice cream spot with 50’s diner decor; they also have burgers and fries! Closer to campus is The Cup, another Lehigh ice cream staple. Twenty Four East is the spot for your sushi fix, and U & Tea has delicious Chinese food. Zest is a more upscale restaurant, with an outdoor patio for when the weather is nice.

What to Do: During the COVID-19 pandemic, odds are if you ask Lehigh students what they have been doing as an activity, they will tell you they’ve been going on walks. Fun walking destinations include: The Steel Stacks, located about ten minutes from campus. The Steel Stacks are from the days when Bethlehem was a steel mining town. They are full of history and a unique destination.Walking to The Bethlehem Star is on every Lehigh students bucket list and I’m embarrassed to admit I have not yet done it. Located at the top of the hill, the Star is a Bethlehem icon and a fun adventure to check off your list with friends. Going up to Goodman Campus, Lehigh’s athletic complex, is another picturesque destination. During the fall foliage Goodman is especially beautiful. Take a walk across the Fahy Bridge, which connects the South Side and the North Side. There is also a path under the bridge along the Lehigh River.

The North Side

Where to Eat: The North Side is awesome to walk around Main Street, shop and eat a delicious meal. You really feel like you are away from the “Lehigh Bubble.” The Wise Bean is a new coffee shop. They have lattes, cold brews, mochas and smoothies with cute decor and outdoor seating. Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop is your classic candy store for when you need a sweet treat. The Penn State Creamery is your ice cream spot. The Flying Egg is the perfect Saturday brunch spot to eat outside on Main Street. They have outrageous avocado toast and chicken and waffles on the menu. Billy’s Downtown Diner is another great diner option for Sunday morning before you spend all day in the library. Urbano Mexican Kitchen & Bar is every student's favorite spot come Thursday night. Main Street is always busy and filled with live music come the weekends, so it’s very fun to sit on Main Street with your friends, enjoying a delicious meal.

Where to Shop: If you are in the mood to do some thrift shopping The Attic Bethlehem is the place for you. Take some time and you may just find something amazing.

Other Places to Explore

A short car ride away is the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley. There are other amazing restaurants such as Kome, Torre and Melt. Brand-name stores such as Old Navy, American Eagle and Athleta are all in the Promenade as well.

Check out Allentown or Easton, both of which are mining towns. If you’re yearning for a quicker pace of life, Philadelphia is only an hour away.
