A College Kid’s Guide to Keene

As a proud New Yorker, I never saw myself leaving the state. In fact, I pictured myself going to college in New York City. But to my surprise, while applying to schools, I came across this little liberal arts college in New Hampshire called Keene State, and I am so thankful I did.

Outdoor Activities: Because New Hampshire has such spectacular mountain views, spending time outdoors is a must. Stonewall Farm is a great place to go on a sunny Saturday afternoon; the local farm is famous for their house-made Frisky Cow Gelato. Keene students love to explore Otter Brook Dam and hike Mt. Monadnock. About 20 minutes outside of Keene is Alyson’s Orchard. Alyson’s is super scenic, and has plenty of ponds and fun fall events. Skiing and snowboarding are very popular amongst Keene State students as well. A lot of people love to spend time at Mt. Snow in Vermont, which is just an hour away from Keene. About 30 minutes away from campus is Brattleboro, VT. The quaint town sits on the Connecticut River and has so many shops and restaurants to choose from.

Where to Eat: When it comes to restaurants, you will always find something you love. Fireworks, though temporarily closed, is a popular dinner spot with great Italian food. Papagallos Restaurant is another quality Italian, just a five-minute drive from campus. A couple doors down is Stage Restaurant, which serves classic comfort food in an amazing atmosphere. One of my personal favorite restaurants in downtown Keene is Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant. Margarita’s is known for its Mexican cuisine and their margaritas are delicious. Another one of my favorites is The Works Cafe, where you can get coffee, sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and some of the best macaroni and cheese around. Other staples include Lindy’s Diner and The Pub Restaurant, for an inexpensive Sunday breakfast. Keene also has a variety of coffee shops to choose from. Prime Roast Co. and Brewbakers Cafe are Keene State cult favorites; you can grab a cup of coffee to go or even sit and get some homework done. The Monadnock Food Co-op is notorious for its healthy food options, supporting local farmers while improving the local economy. Many people grab groceries there and as well.

Where to Drink: Keene, NH has a very busy and lively downtown with homey pubs, bars, and breweries. Cobblestone Ale House, Lab N Lager, and The Pour House are just a few of the many spots that Keene State students love.

On-Campus: Sizzlers is a Keene State staple that can be found in the L.P. Young Student Center. Get The Sizzler, which is very similar to a gyro, and can be enjoyed with all different fillings, toppings, and sauces.
