A College Kid’s Guide to Fairfield

Hi! My name is Gianna Catalano, and I’m a Junior nursing student at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. When I was a Senior in high school, I always imagined myself going to a huge school. I was reluctant to go to Fairfield at first because it wasn’t on my radar—to most, Fairfield has the reputation of a small Jesuit college. In reality, it is so much more than that, and I quickly came to love all that Fairfield has to offer. Almost three years later, I can confidently say that choosing Fairfield University was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Where to Eat: As a self-proclaimed foodie, I am always up for trying new places. My goal is to hit every restaurant in the town of Fairfield before I graduate. If you are looking for a nice Sunday brunch, The Sinclair is the place to go. Their mimosas are amazing and the brunch menu is *chef’s kiss.* Chef’s Table is a cozy place with the best breakfast sandwiches in town. I have yet to order from their lunch menu, but I’ve heard they have the best soups in Connecticut. What’s not to love about a deli in an old firehouse?! Firehouse Deli has the best hot, cold, and grilled sandwiches you’ll ever try. Fairfield students love Firehouse Deli for a quick lunch break. They even made a “Fairfield U Grilled Chicken Panini” with grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo—it’s to-die-for. Colony Grill is an all time favorite for Fairfield students; their speciality is thin-crust pizza and they have every topping under the sun. If you are craving Mexican food, Bodega is the place to go. It’s a small restaurant with tacos and quesadillas that will make your mouth water. You must try the grilled corn as a side. Molto has amazing authentic Italian food, and is the perfect restaurant to take your parents when they visit. Milkcraft is an artisanal ice cream shop with unique flavors and fluffy bubble waffle cones. Saugatuck Sweets is a more traditional ice cream store that has a wide variety of candy, as well.

What to Do: Penfield and Jennings Beaches are Fairfield’s most popular attraction. Fairfield Seniors have the option to rent waterfront houses right on the beach. My friends and I love to grab takeout and sprawl out on the sand for a sunset dinner. A morning walk or workout on the beach always hits the spot, too. Westport is another Connecticut suburb, just a ten-minute drive from Fairfield. Westport is a charming town with sophisticated shopping and dining options. Some of my favorite places to pop into are South Moon Under, Brandy Melville, Anthropology, Lululemon, Benefit Cosmetics, and more. A fun day or weekend trip to New York City is a favorite amongst Fairfield students. It’s only an hour and a half train ride from Fairfield to Manhattan on the Metro North line! If you’re looking for a divey bar atmosphere, The Seagrape is your best bet. It’s a laid-back, old-style bar that is perfect for a fun night with friends. They have great outdoor seating and an extensive bar-food menu. Apricot Lane is a trendy boutique that has casual-wear and dressy fashion as well as accessories. If you need a dress for a special occasion, head to Apricot Lane for the latest and unique styles. They are always looking for models and some of my friends love working with them.
Although Fairfield University is a smaller school, you will have the opportunity to meet so many people and make friends that will be in your life forever. The Fairfield University community is one that is incredibly warm and welcoming; I have such a love for this school and hope anyone who comes here does too.
