A College Kid’s Guide to Durham

I once heard Durham, North Carolina described as the Portland of the South. Its quirky vibe and progressive attitude makes you question whether or not you’re in a Southern state. Duke University will provide you with the best of both worlds: a tight-knit community where you can find determined individuals passionate about their niche, as well as access to a city with high-rise buildings and a bustling downtown.

It’s no secret that Duke students study a lot. Fear not! There are many coffee shops that provide the perfect mix between a quiet study space and a stimulating atmosphere. One of my favorites, Cloche, is located right next to East Campus. Make sure you get there early to get a good spot; the small space fills up quickly and is always packed with Duke students. Try their creamy coffee or matcha, and get a homemade muffin or scone. Another popular pick is Foster Street Coffee. Equipped with a study room that includes a white board, Foster Street Coffee is the perfect place to grind. With little picnic tables, intricate drinks, and flaky pastries, Guglhupf will make you feel like you’re in a quaint German village. This is my go-to if I want to work outside.

Food wise, Durham shocked me. Coming from Phoenix, Arizona, a place I tout for having surprisingly amazing cuisine, I was astonished by the number of exceptional places to eat by Duke. My favorite, Cucciolo, offers world-class pasta dishes. I recommend the spicy vodka rigatoni, delectable bruschetta, and sophisticated cocktails. Up next is JuJu. An Asian-fusion, sharing style restaurant, JuJu has a wide range of dishes to choose from and will appease any member of your dinner party. If you’re looking for sushi, check out M Sushi. With an authentic Japanese atmosphere, and original menu items you wouldn’t see at your average sushi joint, M Sushi is a must if you’re eating in Durham. Looking for pizza? Pizzeria Toro has some of the most delicious pies around. Vin Rouge is another esteemed establishment that offers French Cuisine. The escargot is top notch, but if you’re not the most adventurous eater, get the burger or mac and cheese. Disclaimer, only dine at Vin Rouge if you’re willing to splurge . Lastly, Durham Food Hall is the perfect place for large groups because everyone can choose which vendor they want to order from. Inside you’ll find sandwiches, noodles, pizza, and my personal favorite, Everything Bagels.

With an assortment of alcohols to choose from—beer, sours, ciders, wine and taps—Pour is unique in that you pour your drink. It’s great for large groups and is relatively close to other restaurants and bars downtown. Bull McCabe’s, an Irish pub with picnic tables and string lights, is also great for big groups who may be bar-hopping. Ponysaurs has a wide variety of beers and ciders and is perfect for a casual night. Last but not least is Box Car! Both a bar and an arcade, Box Car is a fun place for those who love a little competition. You can snack on bar food, sip on yummy cocktails, and beat your friends in skeeball.
