A College Kid’s Guide to Austin

Austin, Texas… need I say more? As a junior at the University of Texas, I can confidently say that four years in Austin will simply not be enough for me. Despite spending ample amounts of time eating out, shopping, and exploring, I have found that my bucket list gets longer and longer every single year. That said, there are a handful of places that I feel the need to recommend to anyone who visits Austin. While this guide is anything but complete, it definitely will give you a good insight into some of my favorite places to eat, drink, shop, and adventure.

Where to Eat: I could probably write an entire book about all of the fantastic restaurants in Austin. Austin has no shortage of unbelievable and authentic food, from the classic tacos and barbecque to Vietnamese and Mediterranean. For my first-timers, though, there are a few places that I just have to mention. Number one on my list is Terry Blacks BBQ. Terry Blacks covers all the bases: Brisket that falls off the bone and mac and cheese that could bring world peace; Terry Blacks has the classic Texas BBQ that you didn't know you needed. Now for the tacos: either Taco Joint or Torchy’s is definitely the place to go. With the two restaurants constantly starting arguments amongst Austinites about which one is better, I guess you'll just have to try both to figure it out! (P.S., My vote is Torchy’s, and don't forget to get extra queso!). If you're in the mood for live music, Guerro’s Mexican has the best outdoor space with live bands and frozen margaritas on the weekends. Now, for the more niche places: Elizabeth Street Cafe, a Vietnamese restaurant, makes the best spring rolls I've ever had. Some other hot spots on my list are Aba, a new Mediterranean place with an impressive outdoor setup, and Loro, Asian and barbecue fusion. Next, for brunch, some of the go-to’s are Cafe No Se, Hanks, Cenote (my personal favorite), and South Congress Cafe. Finally, for dessert, Gourdough's donuts or Amy’s Ice Cream would be my choice.

Where to Shop: If you didn't think Austin had good shopping, you would be sorely mistaken. One of my favorite spots to browse stores ranging from small boutiques to major fashion chains is South Congress. South Congress has everything you need and more. Most notable, however, is Allen’s Boots. Allen’s is where most out-of-staters find themselves when they want to feel like a true Texan for a minute or two. With thousands of pairs of cowboy boots and hats to match, it's pretty easy to lose your sense of time in between the aisles. Also on South Congress is Jo’s Coffee and the famous “I Love You So Much” wall. Besides taking a cute picture with friends, Jo’s coffee is also unbelievable and the perfect place to stop for a break between all of the shopping.

Where to Explore: One of the arguably best parts about Austin is the weather. When it's 80 degrees in February, it gives you all the time in the world to explore some of the most exciting and unique spots around. Most people, myself included, will tell you that their favorite place just to sit and chill outside is Zilker Park. Zilker is a major hub for fun outdoor activities like picnics and tanning and is a major hotspot for Austin’s dogs. Zilker is the perfect place to waste away a day and just chill with friends outdoors. Next, another Austin favorite is Barton Springs. Barton Springs is the best place to cool off by a natural water spring when it's 110 degrees in August. Again, this is a major hotspot for the dogs of Austin. Lastly, the 360 Bridge is a great place to bring dinner and watch the sunset with fantastic water views.

So, if you couldn't tell, Austin has a ridiculous amount to offer, and there is so much more to do. As I said before, this list is anything but complete, but it definitely should give you a place to start. I hope this helps, and Hook ‘Em!
